Mental Health Matters

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a vital time to remind ourselves—and our communities—of the importance of prioritizing mental well-being. Bridging The Gaps of Arkansas is standing with health leaders and community advocates to spotlight mental wellness, end stigma, and encourage every community member to take active steps toward healthier, more supportive lives.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), one in five adults in the United States experiences mental illness each year. Yet far too many go without help—often due to shame, lack of access, or financial hardship. Among youth, suicide remains one of the leading causes of death, underscoring the urgent need for education, early intervention, and strong local support systems.

Mental health is not just a personal issue—it’s a community concern. Research shows our mental well-being is closely tied to physical health, relationships, job performance, and even our children’s success in school. When we neglect our mental health or fail to support those around us, entire communities are affected.

“We want every person to know it’s okay to ask for help. It’s okay to rest. It’s okay to talk to someone. As neighbors, as families, as churches and schools, we all play a part in creating communities where people feel safe, seen, and supported. Let’s take better care of ourselves—and each other.” —Johnny Riley Jr., CEO of Bridging The Gaps of Arkansas

“Awareness alone isn’t enough. We must take action,” added Luz Vazquez, Director of Community Outreach. “From attending community events to simply checking on a friend, every effort helps us move toward healing. Together, we can create a culture where mental health is not hidden, but embraced.”

Bridging The Gaps of Arkansas invites residents across the region to get involved by participating in local mental health activities, sharing prevention resources, or starting honest conversations within their circles.

If you need to talk, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available 24/7. Text or call 988.
