Red Lick Middle School 2025 Perspective

A message from Red Lick Middle School Valedictorian, Grant Swenson

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. My name is Grant Swenson, and it is an incredible honor to stand before you today. As someone who has experienced my formative years at Red Lick, from kindergarten all the way through 8th grade, I have grown in countless ways. Throughout my time here, I have internalized a range of character traits such as determination, discipline, hard work, and resilience. I owe a significant part of my success to Red Lick, an institution that has not only shaped my education but also my character.

If it weren't for the inspiring teachers who guided me and the classmates who constantly pushed me to challenge myself, I doubt I would have developed the work ethic necessary to achieve what I have today. For example, I distinctly remember in fifth grade when Mrs. Krobot employed creative methods to motivate us—candy. Her unique approach never failed to spark our enthusiasm. My parents had high standards for me. Their unwavering expectations instilled in me a sense of responsibility and drive.

As I look to the future, I recognize that the journey ahead will not become any easier. It's clear that the expectations will only grow, and I will have to double down on my efforts. I carry with me the invaluable lessons that Red Lick has taught me into this next chapter and beyond. I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to those who have supported me along this journey: my mom and dad, all the dedicated teachers at Red Lick, my classmates, my friends, my family, my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and so many others who have played a role in my success, even if I can't name them all right now.

Reflecting on my years at Red Lick, I am especially grateful for the teachers who shaped my experience. The majority of them embodied qualities like patience, kindness, supportiveness, and genuine care for their students. I fondly recall a particular instance from this year when I mistakenly submitted a math paper that had unanswered questions. Instead of expressing frustration, Mrs. Meeks greeted my request to resubmit with understanding and generosity. In another instance, Mrs. Smolarz demonstrated remarkable patience as I took my time completing a test in fifth grade. Without the incredible educators at Red Lick, many of whom went above and beyond, I wouldn't have gained the knowledge and skills I possess today.

Our class experienced a unique and challenging journey. We adapted to major changes, like when half of our third-grade year was halted due to the pandemic, yet we thrived and managed to learn significantly more than other schools during that time. More recently, we faced new science standards this year that introduced Concept Boosters, but we navigated those hurdles with resilience and teamwork. I am grateful for classmates like Cass and Carson, who excel in math and were always willing to help me check my answers. If I had to encapsulate our class in one word, it would be "special"—we have built bonds that I believe will last a lifetime.

As we move forward into this next chapter of our lives, my hope is that we all remain committed to our education, our sports, and other pursuits. It's important that we hold onto the lessons we've learned here while simultaneously embracing change. Rejecting change is perhaps one of the greatest setbacks you can face in life. Growth and improvement come from our willingness to adapt and evolve.

Finally, drawing inspiration from the great LeBron James, who wisely said, "Success isn't given, it's leased. And the rent is due every day," I want us to remember that success stems from the consistent effort we put in each day. It requires a winning mindset that motivates you to rise each morning and give your utmost—110% effort. Additionally, as my mom often reminds me, "If you halfway do something, you gotta do it again." So, let's strive to give our all from the very beginning every single time. In conclusion, let us commit to paying our rent for success every day, working at that 110% level. Thank you.
