Scoop It Forward with Blue Rooster
Some of my most cherished memories revolve around sharing treats with the people I love. So, when it came time to fulfill a lifelong dream and open a hometown business, I knew I wanted to create a place where memories like that could be made.
Since opening Blue Rooster Scoop Shoppe (1201 Arkansas Boulevard), many people have asked why we chose to specialize in ice cream and Italian ice. The simple answer is that we wanted to make people smile. But it's more than that. My wife, Joana, and I believe ice cream—especially when made with care and served with joy—is kind of magical. It brings people together. It breaks the ice and creates space for something special.
From the very beginning, when we had no location, equipment, logo, or name (the name is a blend of Joana's favorite color and my childhood nickname), we dreamed of a place where people could connect, feel better, and be present with one another.
We often say, "This is about so much more than ice cream," and we mean it. We want our shop to be a space where families slow down, where neighbors meet, and where everyone feels seen. One quote that has always guided me is from Maya Angelou: "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." That's the heart of Blue Rooster. We want people to walk in and feel joy. Feel welcome. Feel like they matter. We hope they experience a glimpse of "life that is truly life" when they're in our store.
Thanks to the amazing people in the greater Texarkana area, some of our dreams are coming true. We've seen fathers spending quality time with their children—no distractions, just scoops and conversations that matter. Moments like these feel timeless. In a world that moves too fast, those quiet, intentional pauses are almost sacred. We're grateful that Blue Rooster gets to be part of them.
We've also witnessed milestone moments. We've watched a young man navigate a nervous first date, helped teenagers on prom night, and high-fived a soccer team after an undefeated season. We've seen an elderly couple celebrate 60 years of marriage, sharing a cup of ice cream like newlyweds. These stories remind us that while we serve dessert, what we're really serving is joy, connection, and lasting memories.
Of course, the product itself matters, too. Every ice cream and Italian ice we serve is made in-house—even the waffle cones. Come by in the morning and take in the smell! It all takes time and heart, but we believe the love we put into our desserts makes them taste better than anything else around. We don't knock the big franchises—we're just different. We experiment, adjust, and pour ourselves into every batch. That's especially true of our two signature flavors: Black Raspberry Cheesecake and Cookie Butter. Our takes on classics like Butter Pecan, Salted Caramel, Black Walnut, and Cookies & Cream have also been customer favorites.
We know not everyone can enjoy traditional ice cream, so we offer six dairy-free Italian ice flavors. From Mango to Lemon to Cotton Candy and Blue Raspberry, they're turning ice cream fans into Italian ice lovers every day. As summer heat lingers, these refreshing treats are only gaining in popularity.
More than anything, Blue Rooster Scoop Shoppe is about togetherness. We've created a space where kids feel safe, teens feel welcome, and grown-ups feel like kids again. To encourage community connection, we started a "Scoop It Forward"wall—a place where you can purchase a cup for someone else. People pay it forward to teammates, family, friends, or even strangers. Some cups are marked for "Anyone… Yes, YOU!" Others honor first responders or military veterans. We've even seen cups bought for people wearing overalls! Watching this program grow has been incredibly special. Some families come in weekly just for the tradition of finding someone to bless.
From the beginning, we hoped Blue Rooster would become a bright spot in people's lives. A place that creates stories—"Remember when we came here after the championship game?" "This was our first stop after the hospital." "I'll never forget the flavor she picked that day." "I still don't know what was in that mystery Blue Rooster flavor!"
