Woosley Chiropractic Clinic has been a trusted name in Texarkana for over a century, spanning three generations of dedicated chiropractors. It began in the fall of 1921 when Dr. Homer E. Woosley, known as “H.E.,” opened his practice after graduating from Palmer Chiropractic University in 1919. He first operated in the Texarkana National Bank building before relocating to a freestanding office on Pine Street, where he practiced for 36 years. Through the Great Depression, Dr. H.E. exchanged services for goods and earned the respect of the local medical community—an uncommon achievement at the time.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Dr. John D. Woosley, or “J.D.,” graduated from Texas Chiropractic College in 1949 and pursued postgraduate studies at Palmer before joining his father’s practice. Upon Dr. H.E.’s retirement in 1957, Dr. J.D. relocated the clinic to Olive Street in 1960, where he practiced for 51 years until his retirement in 2000.

Continuing the family legacy, Dr. J.D.’s son, Jeffrey E. Woosley, graduated from Texas Chiropractic College in 1984 and joined his father’s practice in 1985. For 15 years, they worked side by side, sharing their passion for chiropractic care. Today, Dr. Jeff carries on the Woosley tradition at the Olive Street location, providing compassionate care to generations of patients.

The success of Woosley Chiropractic stands on the dedication of those who came before, from early practitioners and staff who persevered through challenging times. Their commitment has helped shape the chiropractic profession into what it is today, ensuring that the Woosley legacy of care continues for years to come.

The Saenger Amusement Company of New Orleans constructed the theatre in 1924, intending to provide live entertainment to the vibrant community of Texarkana. It officially opened its doors to the public on the evening of November 18, 1924, featuring the play Footloose, starring Margaret Anglin and William Faversham. The company enlisted the services of renowned New Orleans architect Emile Weil, who designed the three-story building inspired by Neo-Italian Renaissance architecture, characterized by simplicity on the exterior and opulence within.

In 1931, the Paramount-Publix Corporation acquired the Saenger Theatre, subsequently renaming it the Paramount. Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, the theatre thrived as a popular venue for motion pictures, drawing large crowds of moviegoers. Until the 1960s, it showcased both live productions and first-run films. However, as television gained popularity, interest in the theatre began to wane. The Paramount transitioned to screening second-and third-rate films before ultimately closing its doors in March 1977.

In the same year, the City of Texarkana, Texas, purchased the theatre from S & H Theatre Corporation of New Orleans for $19,000, as part of the Comprehensive Downtown Development Plan. The extensive restoration project totaled $2.4 million. Texarkana natives, H. Ross Perot and his sister Bette generously contributed $800,000 toward the restoration in memory of their parents. In recognition of the Perot family’s contributions, the city council renamed the theatre the Perot Theatre.

The grand opening of the restored venue took place on Saturday, May 2, 1981, four years after its acquisition. To date, over one million attendees have enjoyed more than 1,000 events at this historic venue.

Twitty Nursery has proudly served Texarkana since 1925. Founded by R.S. Twitty, the nursery was purchased in 1948 by Aubrey and Katherine Harper, grandparents of Kathie Eaton. Their daughter, Jean Crain, and her husband, Bill, joined the business in 1955, gaining hands-on experience in its thriving retail yard, landscape services, and farm division. In 1969, the Crains became partners, ensuring the nursery’s continued growth. By 1996, Kathie and Mike Eaton became third-generation owners, modernizing and expanding while keeping the community at the heart of the business.

Now, the legacy continues with Josh Eaton and his wife, Marisol, emerging as the next generation of owners. Their dedication to Twitty Nursery ensures that it remains a local and loved nursery in Texarkana.

Operating from its original location at 4815 West 7th Street, Twitty Nursery spans eight acres with three interlinking divisions—a full-service retail yard, landscaping and design, and a farm. It offers the widest selection of plants in the region, and provides expert guidance on plant care, insect control, and soil improvement. For nearly a century, Twitty Nursery has been rooted in tradition while growing toward the future.

Texarkana’s first library was established in the late 1800s, serving members of the Young Women’s Christian Association. In November 1925, a public meeting led to the creation of the Texarkana Public Library Association, and by December, the city’s first public library opened at the corner of State Line Avenue and 7th Street. Initially sustained through memberships, donations, and support from the Community Chest, the library operated under this model until 1951.

As Texarkana grew, so did the need for a larger facility. In 1950, Texarkana, Texas, donated land in James Bowie City Park, and Texas residents approved an $80,000 bond to fund construction. In 1951, Arkansas passed legislation permitting tax dollars to support the library, and a one-mill tax was approved. A red brick Georgian-style building opened in January 1952, and by 1969, increased city funding eliminated membership fees, making the library fully accessible to all residents.

Expansion continued with a new facility, completed in 1980 with support from an Economic Development Administration Grant. A significant renovation in 2006, funded by a 2002 Texarkana, Texas, bond election, modernized the space. For over a century, the library has remained a cornerstone of the community, continuously evolving to meet the needs of its patrons.
