Hooks ISD 2025 Senior Perspective

A Message from 2025 Hooks High School Valedictorian Brenley Patterson

Good evening, parents, friends, teachers, administrators, and, of course, the graduating class of 2025. Today is the day we say goodbye to our past, and hello to our future. No matter what our reasons were for choosing Hooks High School so very few years ago, what is important now is all the hard work we have put in to reach our future dreams. Each of us has had our own unique experiences at Hooks, a combination of good and bad times, times of laughter and joy, and of course, times of last-minute studying for that exam we forgot that was taking place the next morning (Evan). Hooks High School has been a very important part of who I was and who I am now. I have learned so many lessons, big and small, and will continue to keep learning and growing as an individual. I remember when I first stepped into Hooks High School that, I wanted to be someone no one would expect to see work so hard. I put in countless hours of studying while also working a part-time job, and I felt like I did not deserve to be in this position. It all felt so impossible to accomplish, but I knew I could push through these obstacles. I would stress over simple, small things, not even realizing that I had reached some of my childhood dreams. At the beginning of my senior year, I knew I was ready to finish off these challenges in any way I could. I worked my butt off my junior year but still did not think I was good enough to be first. On the first day of school, Mrs. Hackett called me to her office to discuss something about rankings.

Now, I usually bother her all the time, and she would smile, but I think deep down she was like, “What is it this time?” She handed me a slip of paper that said that I was ranked first in my class. My initial thought was that I did not deserve this one bit. This title was something I wanted but not something I needed. I started to cry ugly because I had just realized I accomplished something others thought I could not do. This is when I realized that Hooks has changed my perspective of how hard work is defined. It is not defined by your title; It is defined by taking the time to actually work for that spot. My time at Hooks has taught me to always strive to be the best, no matter what might be in my way. Tough times don’t last long, but tough people do. My work ethic and mindset have shaped me into the person I am, and I am thankful that I never gave up throughout these last four years. I would like to take the time to thank God for everything he has done for me in the years past and now. He has guided me through every hardship and failure and has shown me unconditional love with every step. My family and friends, thank you for all the continued support and encouragement throughout the years. You have all truly made a lasting impact on my life. I am very blessed to have people in my corner who I know will always be there no matter what. My teachers that I have had since I was a little kid, thank you for the countless hours and days y’all have spent helping me and pushing me to become the best I could be. I truly do not think I would be here today if it was not for y all’s dedication and patience with every lesson. The Hooks community, thank you for always taking the time to make sure everyone was taken care of. Your continued support has never gone unnoticed, and I know that we will carry that support wherever we end up next. And now, to my fellow classmates, I thank you for the last four years, full of memories and countless moments together. As we go our separate ways into adulthood, never forget who you truly are and who you want to be in this world. I know that every single one of you will become something great and will continue to succeed wherever you go. It might seem scary, and sometimes it might feel like there is no point in trying to reach something so far away, but I promise you in the end it will all be worth it. You will look back and think, wow, I never thought I would have made it this far. The world is waiting for you to make your mark, to contribute your unique talents, and to make a difference. Don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone, to learn from your experiences, and to build a life that is both fulfilling and meaningful. So, as we say goodbye to high school and step into the next chapter of our lives, let us remember the lessons we have learned, the friendships we have made, and the values we have embraced. Let us go forth with courage, confidence, and a commitment to making a positive impact on the world. Thank you all again for your support and encouragement. Congratulations, Class of 2025!
