Making Lila Martin’s Wish Come True

There are moments in life that remind us what truly matters, not in grand, sweeping gestures, but in the quiet fulfillment of something deeply personal. For one Texarkana woman, that moment recently came in the form of a simple wish: to feel beautiful again.

At Heritage Home Health & Hospice, caring for patients means far more than managing medical needs. Hospice, at its heart, is about helping individuals live their remaining time with comfort, dignity, and meaning. Sometimes that care looks like holding a hand, offering spiritual support, or helping a family navigate an incredibly emotional season of life. And sometimes, it looks like making a wish come true.

Through the Wishes by Heritage program, Heritage works with community partners to help fulfill meaningful wishes for hospice patients. It is important to note that these wishes are never offered as an incentive for care. They are made possible entirely through donations and support from generous community partners who believe in bringing moments of joy and comfort to those who need it most.

That generosity recently helped fulfill a heartfelt wish for Lila Martin.

Lila shared with her care team that she simply wanted to feel like herself again. Because of her illness, she had not been able to do some of the small things that once brought her confidence and joy. Her wish was beautifully simple: she wanted to have her hair done so she could “feel beautiful again,” have her beloved dog Paco professionally groomed, and take updated family photos with the people she loves most.

What followed was a community coming together in the most touching way.

Paco was treated to a grooming appointment at Dirty Dog Spa, while Lila received a perm, haircut, styling, and eyebrow shaping from Lisa Harris at The Style Studio. The transformation was not just physical. It lifted her spirits in a way that everyone around her could feel.

To capture the moment, Erin Treadway Photography photographed Lila, Paco, and multiple generations of her family, including her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, at the Texarkana Magazine studio. The portraits will serve as lasting memories of a day filled with smiles, laughter, and togetherness.

For the team at Heritage, moments like these are a reminder of why hospice care matters so deeply. The goal is never just about the end of life. It is about making sure every patient is seen, valued, and surrounded with compassion during one of the most vulnerable chapters of their story.

Heritage Home Health & Hospice has been providing compassionate care to East Texas for over 10 years, growing organically through trusted relationships and word of mouth from families and healthcare partners. Programs like Wishes by Heritage are simply an extension of that mission, a reflection of the belief that every patient deserves love, dignity, and respect.

These special moments would not be possible without the generosity of local partners who help make wishes like Lila’s come to life. Heritage would like to extend sincere thanks to Commercial National Bank of Texarkana, Potter & Marks PLLC, Neeley’s Towing & Recovery, Southern Insurance Group, Wholesale Electric Supply Co. Inc., Simmons Bank, and Elite Realty Group of Texarkana for supporting this meaningful program.

Because of their kindness and the dedication of volunteers and community businesses, wishes like Lila’s can become beautiful memories for families to hold onto forever.

Heritage’s social media team documented the special day, capturing both the big moments and the small details. A video highlighting the experience has been shared on the Heritage Home Health & Hospice Facebook page for those who would like to watch.

If you or your business would like to partner with Heritage Home Health & Hospice to help make wishes come true for hospice patients, contact Kristy Minton, Volunteer Coordinator, at 903-559-1794.

Sometimes the most powerful acts of compassion are also the simplest, helping someone feel beautiful, celebrating the love of family, and reminding a person that they are cherished.

And on one unforgettable day in Texarkana, that is exactly what happened.
