“All of our exhibits we program and host in the region are special, but sometimes they can involve artists who haven't spent much time in our area (if at all!). Part of what makes this exhibit so special is that this is a young person who had the typical upbringing in Texarkana and has been so enthusiastic about returning home for a project,” Exhibits Coordinator Marcus Zwiebel said. “I think it's important to celebrate artists that are from your community because, in some capacity, they're probably related to you—either by blood, interest, or the schools that you went to.”
For Will Bryant, this exhibition is more than just a showcase; it’s a heartfelt return to the community that shaped him.
“It’s an incredible honor to be able to share this collection of work with the community that helped raise me. As a kid growing up in Texarkana, I had no idea that I would be an artist or designer. In some ways, art saved me. I was not great at school in the traditional sense, but I always saw things differently than others around me did,” Bryant said. “I want a kid from Pleasant Grove Elementary or Redlick Elementary to be able to see my work and think, ‘Huh! I could make a painting like that!’ And they could! I hope they do! Rather than making exclusive work only to be seen in galleries, I have always gravitated towards making work that people could experience more easily—like murals in public places, uniforms for the Austin Spurs, or patterns on a cup of ice cream. After all, I’m just a kid from a small town. I didn’t grow up visiting galleries or studying art movements that informed my view of the world, but art is everywhere, and I hope that my work feels approachable. Comfortable. Familiar.”
The Regional Arts Center is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. and, like all of TRAHC’s visual art exhibits, is FREE to the public. School and civic group tours are available upon request.
