Publisher's Letter

Every neighborhood has “that” neighbor—the one whose choices cause the rest of the block to cringe a little. Maybe they leave their trash cans out too long, their lawn is not manicured as neatly as the others, they have campers and boats parked in the driveway, or they have a dog that greets every passerby with endless barking. You know the type. The real surprise, however, comes when you realize you might be that neighbor. I adore my neighborhood and its people, but I am not sure they feel the same way about us. … Just last week, during her morning walk, one of my neighbors sent me a text:

Friday Night Lights 2024

The air buzzes with excitement as crowds gather under the Friday night lights, decked out in school colors and noisemakers eager to cheer for their teams. Despite differences between Texarkana’s high school students, Friday night football games serve as a unifying force. … On game nights, students fill the stands, proudly dressed in school colors, regardless of the opponent. How can I tell them to chill out without becoming the next viral video?Sincerely, Ref-Rescue Ranger … Dear Ref-Rescue Ranger, … The shortest path to stopping that in its tracks is by simply bringing a black-and-white striped shirt for them to wear since they apparently know everything. But this will also lead to you not having friends. … That being said, children learn by example from you and your real friends.

Pleasant Grove's New Facility Focus on Relationships, Growth, Discipline, and Belief … Pleasant Grove has had a lot to be proud of under the direction of head coach Josh Gibson, and many would say that the new athletic facility may just be the biggest achievement yet. It’s state-of-the-art in every way, but to Coach Gibson, the most important part is how the facility can serve the kids. “Probably one of the most important pieces is right when we walk in the door. In the foundation, there is a Bible that was placed here when they were pouring the slab.

Two of Texarkana’s very own are participating in the 2024 Paris Olympics this year, which is truly mind-blowing! … The talent and drive these two young athletes must possess, to earn a place in the most prestigious athletic competitions in the world, is hard to fathom. They always make it look easy, but we all know it’s not. Jarrion Lawson is a sprinter and long jumper, and Joscelyn Roberson is a gymnast who has been training alongside SIMONE BILES! It is the coolest thing that these two amazing athletes hail from Texarkana.

As we focus on getting back to school, I wanted to provide you with some information on the State Board of Education (SBOE). … Many of you may wonder what the SBOE does and how it works with charter schools and local school districts. … It is confusing that we have a State Board of Education and a Texas Education Agency. These two entities run parallel with each other as neither is over the other. Mike Morath is the Commissioner of Education, and he was appointed by the Governor.
