The 2025 Tax Showdown

Nathaniel Moran, United States Representative, Texas First Congressional District
This year, there will be two Super Bowls for Americans to watch. One will be played on a physical field made of artificial turf, highlighting two high-caliber professional football teams, while the other—something I like to call the “Super Bowl of Tax Policy”—will be played on the political field of Washington, D.C., highlighting two very different economic philosophies. One pushing higher taxes and more government spending, and the other one fighting to reduce the tax burdens on Americans. I, of course, will be on the side of lower taxation.

Good Evening TXK

It’s such beautiful chaos. A bride clutches her bouquet, her hands trembling slightly with excitement. The photographer adjusts his lens for the perfect shot. The videographer checks her lighting as the caterers buzz around in the background, ensuring each plate is picture-perfect. The DJ tests the sound system, music vibrating through the air. Everything is falling into place. But until now, there’s been one piece missing.

If These Walls Could Talk

A Special Kind of Love … February is known for Valentine’s Day and Heart Health Awareness Month, both evoking images of love and reminding us to show our appreciation to those we hold close. I could write to you all about how much I love my husband, or take this chance to celebrate my sweet daddy’s Valentine’s Day birthday. But I really want to talk about our family’s number one love—my dad calls her Shelley, I call her Momma, and my kids call her “Love.” … It started when my husband and I were dating and had our first child, our dog Palmer.

Publisher's Letter

Did anyone else feel like they were not ready for January to arrive, only for it to disappear in the blink of an eye? I am still a little salty about Thanksgiving being so late—it completely threw off my rhythm for the holiday season. Add in the most underwhelming snow day ever, and it did not feel like the new year had truly begun until we were halfway through the first month. But here we are, already in February. … This month brings big changes for our family. My husband is starting a new job after working eight wonderful years at Texarkana Funeral Home.

How to Rock 2025 with Your Money

photos by Matt Cornelius
Forget setting New Year’s resolutions that fizzle out by February. When it comes to your money, you need strategies that last and work in real life, not just on paper. … Here is the truth—nearly a quarter of resolutions don’t survive the first week, and only about a third make it past the first month. Add that to the fact nearly half of us admit to crying over our money woes, and it’s clear we need better tools for success. (Yes, even people earning $250,000+ cry about their finances. Who knew?) … Let’s make 2025 the year we stop crying and start winning with our money.

From Rock Bottom to Redemption

photos by Matt Cornelius
“What brought me to Celebrate Recovery was an almost 30-year addiction to methamphetamine and marijuana,” said Celeste King, a Celebrate Recovery participant. “I had hit rock bottom and ended up in jail. As part of my probation, I was required to attend meetings. I had heard about the program through a friend who had been attending. Honestly, jail and the possibility of prison time made me decide that a change needed to be made. Celebrate Recovery gave me the courage to trust and recognize that I deserved and wanted a life free from addiction.” … Today, King is five years sober.
