2021 LEHS Senior Perspective

When thinking back on all the things I have accomplished over the past four years at Liberty Eylau High School, I am filled with a feeling of satisfaction. From maintaining a 4.0 GPA to advancing twice in UIL One-Act play, to having tried various activities to see where I truly fit in, I have very few regrets. Liberty-Eylau has been my school since I was in kindergarten, and it will always hold a special place in my heart. … I have always been a very blessed person. I did not have to study much until my junior year, when things became very hectic for me.

Out of the almost eight billion people in the world, there are only a handful who have earned the title of “Living Legend.” Of those legendary few, Texarkana can proudly claim one of the greatest who grew up right here in our city. In 60 years of artistry, he has earned more accolades than most people do in an entire lifetime. But our hometown legend is still making music and entertaining fans. For those of us who love Texarkana, USA, Dr. Otis Williams is a source of pride.

Our Journey

Inside each of us is a story. A story that reveals the ups and downs of our journey through life and all the choices we make in between. For Karen and Artie Rayfield, theirs is a story of second chances and silent heroes who came alongside them… heroes who did not give up on them in their darkest days but gave them a reason to look up and keep going. Now they are the silent heroes for so many in our community, all because someone down the road stepped in and made a difference in their story. … Karen moved to Chicago at 19, leaving her home and an abusive relationship behind.

Dr. Otis Williams is the founding, and only surviving, member of the original, legendary, super-group The Temptations. … Check out our story on Dr. Williams and The Temptations here. … What do you love about Texarkana? … It’s my birthplace, so I’ll always love it and call it home. It’s where my mother, Hazel Louise Williams and my father, Otis Miles, grew up and met. I lived in Texarkana with my grandparents because my mother moved to Detroit to find work, and I joined her when I was around eleven years old.

No Shame Zoloft GameI got lost in a hotel when I was a little girl. In reality, it was probably only a few minutes, but that time of being separated from my family stamped me with anxiety with which I’ll likely always struggle. The racing heart, the light-headedness, the feeling of complete helplessness and lack of control over what is happening... It can be terrifying. But I’ve been on medication for years now and let me tell you, there ain’t no shame in my Zoloft game.

A Sarine Thought… or Two

The Life EquationMama always said, ‘Life is like a box of chocolates: you never know what you’re gonna get.’” —Forrest Gump … Ah, Forrest, there is such truth to your mother’s life observation. However, the more life I experience, the more I find it comes with a call to action and is not dependent on the luck of the draw like when choosing from the Godiva box. In fact, it seems to me to be downright mathematical.

A Place to be Together

“This is where we live,” Jill Flanagan said several times as we walked around her house. She loves that they enjoy spending time together, just living and making everyday memories as a family. Honestly, I’m not sure a higher compliment could be paid to the design or style of a home because ultimately that is the purpose of our houses… to live… to invite us in and make us comfortable. … The Flanagan home is welcoming from the moment you pull into the driveway until the moment you leave. The modern French Country style is composed of brick.

This is the month we get to celebrate our dads, not just for the roles they play, but for the men they really are. The importance and challenges of fatherhood can sometimes be overlooked. The role of the father in American society is constantly evolving. Traditionally, fathers have shouldered the cultural image of breadwinner, disciplinarian and authority figure. How often do you remember hearing your mother say, “Just wait until your father gets home!” to get you back on the right track?

Moving Fore-ward

Graci Henard stepped up to the 15th tee box of the 2020 Jay Brewer Memorial Lady Tiger Classic at Texarkana Country Club, down five strokes with four holes to play. After a 30-foot birdie on the 15th hole and a par on the 16th, Henard was still down three strokes with two holes to play. During this improbable comeback moment, she kept saying to herself (and out loud) “I want it more than her.
