As long as I can remember, I have loved animals. In my childhood we had horses, bunnies, cats, hermit crabs, and my favorite of them all, dogs. Our beloved Retrievers were not allowed in the house because of our severe allergies. This is not a problem that only my family encountered. In the early 1990s, a blind woman in Hawaii needed a service dog, but her husband was allergic to all dogs that shed. Because they most commonly use Labradors and Golden Retrievers as service dogs, this was a dilemma for them.

CASA Colorful 5K

The CASA Colorful 5K and Family Run is back! Join us this Saturday, April 24, at Trinity Baptist Church for a morning full of fun for the whole family. The Kids Fun Run (ages 5-12) will begin at 8:30 am, followed by the Adult Run at 9:00 am. The race begins with each participant releasing a bag of color into the air creating a beautiful burst of color at the starting line. Stations will also be located throughout the race where runners will be showered with brightly colored powder.

Be A Hero

If you know me, you know I’m obsessed with my boxer. The truth is, I like dogs more than I like most people. This makes helping with animal rescue come naturally. Adopting instead of buying a dog or a cat gives you the chance to save a life! There are countless healthy, friendly, lovable dogs and cats scheduled for euthanasia in shelters right now. Once I realized the need for fostering and adopting was so immense, it just didn’t make sense to buy another dog. I initially got involved in dog rescue when I spotted my first foster, Carino, on Facebook.

The Service of Peace

After dealing with intractable seizures since the age of 11, I looked into getting a service dog for comfort, care and especially greater independence since I was 27 years old. Online, I came across a breeder in Oklahoma City that breeds labradoodles for a service/therapy dog organization called Paws with a Cause.

Happy first birthday to Cardinal Publishing! We started this journey a year ago, and what a year it has been. Our initial intent was to be a monthly printed publication, hence the name Texarkana Monthly, but 2020 had other plans. It inspired us to step outside the box, transitioning our debut from print to a digital weekly correspondence, Talk Tuesday. Our team had lots of laughs about our name being Texarkana Monthly. “Texarkana Digital Weekly” would have made more sense because the print magazine did not officially become a reality until November.

Wild Ride

Every parent dreams their child will do big things and make a difference, but for Amanda and Lance Gainey, that dream is a reality… and a wild ride! The Gainey’s 13-year-old twin sons, Ethan and Hayden, are sweeping titles across the country for Miniature Bull Riding, and both boys have achieved world champion status. Ethan won the International Miniature Bull Riding Association (IMBA) Junior World Championship in Mesquite, Texas, and Hayden won the International Miniature Rodeo Association (IMRA) Junior Mini Reserve World Championship in Guthrie, Oklahoma.

Survey Says… … I have always been a sucker for mindless television. I look forward to my “me time,” watching reality television, especially those centered on housewives, after the kids go to bed. I think it makes me feel grateful that my life seems a little less complicated and a lot more joyful than those I see on the screen. As my kids are getting older, though, we are looking for more family-friendly shows we can all enjoy. America’s Funniest Home Videos has been a huge hit and we have also been dipping our toes into Family Feud.

Ashlyn and Austin Harvey are high school sweethearts that prove with hard work and perseverance, focus, and a little hustle, life might just lead you to a perfect black cabin in the woods. As newlyweds, they lived in a modest duplex and set their sights on saving money to build the perfect starter home. They set a goal and a budget and began looking for just the right place to call home. “We lived in a super-duper cheap duplex in Nash. And we pinched pennies for two or three years to save up enough to have a decent down payment,” Austin said. “We almost gave up even.
