Good Evening TXK

If there’s one thing that screams “America,” it’s apple pie! … So, when attempting to tap into patriotism for this July article, I thought, “What better way is there to do that than by attempting to bake an apple pie with my friend, editor, mentor, and all-around amazing woman, Kara Humphrey?” And as the adage goes, the experience that ensued was as “American as apple pie!” … I would like to first say I do not bake. When I tell people I am going to cook, I mean I’m taking a piece of Walmart salmon, some yummy frozen veggies, seasoning them all up, and throwing them into the air fryer.

From sire to sire, It’s born in the blood … The fire from a mare and the strength of a stud … It’s breeding and it’s training and it’s something unknown … That drives you and carries you home … And it’s run for the roses as fast as you can … Your fate is delivered, your moment’s at hand … It’s the chance of a lifetime in a lifetime of chance … And it’s high time you joined in the dance … —“Run for the Roses” by Dan Fogelberg … … The Kentucky Derby, also known as the Run for the Roses, has been labeled the most exciting two minutes in sports.

I had an epiphany one day while watching an Oprah interview on YouTube. Maybe this sounds odd to some but growing up in a household with a mother who dished out Oprah and Dr. Phil quotes like they were pieces of Halloween candy, this was hardly anything out of the ordinary for me. In a 2011 interview, Rihanna tearfully told Oprah that the only way she could allow herself to be vulnerable enough to let a man romantically pursue her was by first “repairing her relationship with her dad.” After she forgave her father, she could finally work on trusting men again.

If you’ve never had the pleasure of hearing Kacey Musgraves’ music, I highly recommend you grab your phone immediately, open up the music streaming service of your choice, and hit play on her 2018 Grammy-award-winning album, Golden Hour. It was the soundtrack to my life the entire year after it dropped, and apparently, the mark it made was significant enough for it to be the catalyst for this article I’m writing today, six years after its release. … I’ve probably heard Golden Hour’s opening track, “Slow Burn,” over a thousand times by this point.

Back to the Nest

They say there’s no place like home. But for several of the Texas A&M University-Texarkana athletic teams, “home” has been a somewhat relative term. The Eagles tennis, baseball, and softball teams have held their home competitions at other venues across Texarkana, which by default lack much of the excitement and energy of the game day experience on a college campus. The facilities are well-kept and taken care of and have provided a much-needed home location during the early years of the athletic program.

On my very first day of middle school, I was silently washing my hands with my head down, when, out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a girl who was scanning me up and down. She looked a little taken aback by me before she asked if I was gay. I didn’t know there was a “gay” way to wash your hands, but apparently, I had mastered it. No, I wasn’t wearing anything flashy or attention-grabbing, just some flip-flops and an Aeropostale tee, looking overly plain.

Having those people in our lives who see something special in us when we really don’t even see it in ourselves can be life changing. I have written a handful of articles about those who have yanked the best out of me in my personal life: my mom, Ali Deal, and other family members. But I haven’t really written about those who have mentored, fostered, and nurtured my strengths in my professional life. … While I’d hardly consider myself some highly successful businessman, I have found myself in professional positions I never could have imagined I would be in five years ago.

A Peak into the Cage

Over the past few decades, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) has quickly risen in popularity, drawing audiences from diverse backgrounds and cultures worldwide with its combination of striking and grappling techniques. Blending disciplines such as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, wrestling, and boxing, MMA has created a sporting phenomenon that has demolished traditional boundaries. … As fighters showcase their skills in the cage, the appeal of MMA continues to grow, making a place for itself in Texarkana through Peak Fighting Championship (PFC), a locally owned and managed MMA promotion.

As if there are not already enough questions I ask myself daily about why I am the way I am, I’ve started asking myself a new one. Why in the Sam Hill am I suddenly wide awake the very second my head hits the pillow, when I should be absolutely exhausted at the end of a long, hard day? I get overstimulated, feeling a deep desire to watch every show on Hulu, Google answers to every existential question I have, and stress about the household tasks I’ve had all afternoon to complete.
