No Gym, No Problem

A regular exercise routine can be transformative, and the benefits go far beyond the possible changes to our appearance. A healthy body is often followed by a healthy mind, a healthy level of confidence and a healthy outlook for the future. Whether you prefer strength training, high intensity and cardiovascular training or focus shifting flexibility training, make a commitment to get your body moving in 2022 and experience a whole new you. If you can’t get to the gym, don’t let that stop you. Here are a few exercises to get you started at home.

Good Evening TXK

I’ve heard it said before that New Year’s resolutions are made to be broken. If that is the case, I am going about my resolutions the wrong way. I actually begin the year believing I can achieve my goals. … It always starts off the same way for me. I am determined to stop feeling like a blob of lifeless dough, but never seem to be ready TODAY because Whataburger is only five minutes from my apartment.

TXK Book Club—Books on Santa’s List

Christmas is just a few days away and shopping lists and to-do lists are (hopefully) dwindling. But if you’re anything like me, there is always one person who still needs a gift. Or at least I think I’m missing someone. I want to offer some suggestions for the hard to shop for people in your life and perhaps it will help me check off those last few gifts too.

Whoever said Christmas was the “most wonderful time of the year” has clearly never driven The Shuffle with their friends on a warm summer night with the speakers turned up and the windows down, because while a Christmas tree may be beautiful, a pool and the calming sound of a waterfall is a very close second in my opinion. … Don’t get me wrong, I’m the biggest party boy there is, and there’s no celebration like Jesus’ birthday, but I just wonder… why does it have to be so dang cold?! Why does the sun have to go down so early?! It makes me tired!

Calling the Shots

On my honor, I will never betray my integrity, my character or the public trust. I will always have the courage to hold myself and others accountable for our actions. I will always maintain the highest ethical standards and uphold the values of my community, and the office I serve. … The Law Enforcement Oath of Honor … Sworn officers play a vital role in maintaining safety and face many things every day that put them at great risk. The role they have stepped into is often a hard one and they do the dirty work to shield the rest of us from having to think about it.

Sink or Swim

I am Jed Harrelson. I am originally from Texarkana, Arkansas and have been living in Nashville, Tennessee for the last year and a half. When I first moved to Nashville, I was lead valet at an upscale downtown hotel. On my days off from the hotel, I would play at songwriting events around town and meet new people. In August 2020, they fired me as lead valet for promoting my own music to a celebrity guest, hence really beginning my music career. … While down on myself for being fired, I began looking for a new job.

TXK Book Club—Unbroken

November is chock full of important holidays. As I type this, I can’t help but think of the sweet potato casserole that has been swirling through my head since the calendar turned to November first. Please don’t make me choose between marshmallows or pecans, because I like them both and I want them all! On the eleventh, we honored our Veterans, who should be celebrated every single day, but I’m thankful we have the opportunity to recognize these heroes annually.

I' m about to share an unpopular opinion. It is so unpopular that it will probably be almost offensive to some, so don’t hate me, but… even though I know Thanksgiving should be a holiday for all, I honestly wish Whataburger was open on Thanksgiving Day. Yes, I mean this wholeheartedly. Don’t get me wrong, ham and turkey are GREAT, but would it really be so bad to throw a honey butter chicken biscuit on the side? And you can never go wrong with some fries!

Adventure in the Crosshairs

Mist drains over the mountains and dissipates into the chiseled valley’s belly. At its peaks, clouds are reborn again and again—a contagion of wispy foam. The vapors bind to the chill under the sun and fill the space left between heaven and earth. Among the stillness in the air, flocks of sheep faintly bleat. … Longtime local Kendal Howe works as the payroll services coordinator for Texas A&M-Texarkana but cashed in some vacation days, traveling hundreds of miles north for a big Alaskan sheep hunt.

TXK Book Club—Talking to Strangers

There seems to be a constant buzz in the air at the end of each year that gives us cause to reflect. When I looked back over 2020, I proudly realized I had become an avid reader. I went from (maybe) one-three books per year to 61 books in 2020. Maybe it was the quarantine, maybe it was AirPods, but I had undoubtedly covered more content than I had in years. I followed a guide I found on Pinterest for the year that suggested a new theme each month, which helped me step way out of my comfort zone. Full disclosure...
